Story: The Money Jars Explained

Bote-bote lang yan.

Literal na bote. O kaya’y garapon. Yung malaki!

Ganito kasi yun…

Jun 21 - photo 3

Kung tama ang memory ko, P60,000 per head ang seminar fee at that time. Pero libre akong naka-attend.

Marami ako natutunan:

  • What are the money blueprints
  • Personal life story niya at ng Tatay niya bilang isang World War 2 survivor.
  • Affirmations
  • Meron pang exercise
  • and many more

Sabi ni T. Harv, “You need to pay yourself first.”

Jun 21 - pay yourself first

Ibig sabihin before you pay others (Meralco, water bill, cable, internet, the rent, etc.), pay yourself first.

By paying yourself first, you will have the chance to grow your money. Chance muna.

Mahirap makapagtabi.

Wala naman masama sa pagbabayad ng bills. Pero kung ang goal mo ay magkaroon ng savings and then later on–investments, you need to pay yourself first.

By paying yourself first, you are doing this formula:

salary minus savings

Uunahin mo na muna itabi ang savings.

The purpose of the Money Jars is build and enforce in you the habit of paying yourself first.

I will test the theory.

So ano yang Money Jars?

There are 6 Money Jars (as taught by T. Harv)

  1. Give
  2. Financial Freedom Account
  3. Long-Term Savings for Spending
  4. Education
  5. Play
  6. Necessity

Meron akong in-add na jar later on: Emergency Jar

Things to prepare:

  • 6 jars
  • white envelopes (na kasya ang peso bills)
  • index cards

What To Do:

  • Create Name Tags and place one tag per jar
    • GIVE
    • FFA
    • EMER
    • LTSS
    • EDUC
    • PLAY
  • Every sweldo mo, compute for 10% of your salary. Para di ka mabigla, start with your net salary (salary after taxes).
  • Place the equivalent of 10% of your salary inside each white envelope.
  • Indicate the date and how much money was placed on the index card.
  • Place the envelope and index card inside the jar.
  • Do this on the next pay day.

Ang tip ko dito, lalo na kung first time mo itong gagawin, bumili ka talaga ng jar.

Dapat physical. Dapat visual. Dapat yung nahahawakan mo.

According to an experiment, merely touching bills affected the participants both physically and emotionally. [Touching physical] money dulls physical pain and eases the sting of social rejection.

Jun 22 - Midas touch

Since new habit ito for some, the more physical ang activity, the more engaging. The more the new habit will stick.

I’m glad you asked. Here they are.

jun 22 - give jar

jun 22 - give jar 2

Jun 22 - ffa1 Jun 22 - ffa2

jun 22 - emer1

jun 22 - emer2

jun 22 - 60 percent

So, I did this system for 1 year.

True enough in 2010, I was able to:

  • Invest in the stock market with initial capital of 24,000
  • Enroll in a short course in Ateneo on social entrepreneurship worth 18,000
  • Enroll in 4 short courses in Music in UP Diliman worth 22,000
  • Zero debt
  • and achieve many more short-term financial goals

Since then I’ve been doing the method. Until automatic na siya. Pagdating ng sweldo, funds transfer na lang.

I have multiple accounts, one per “jar”. I also track using Excel.

For goals na very short-term (target is less than a year to a year, physical jars method pa rin)

Personal money management cannot be simpler than this. It should start with this habit.

I am so passionate in sharing the Money Jars lalo na sa mga gusto talaga mag-ipon o mag pundar.

Kaya gumawa na ako ng downloadable PDF file explaining the Money Jars.

You too can download it here: [The Money Jars Edition 3]

Challenge yourself.

Do the Money Jars and pay yourself first.

Mag-start ka na! Now na!

Jun 21 - procrastination

Meron po ba kayong comment, question or suggestion?

P.S. So it goes without saying na you need to be working hard to earn money. However by doing the money jars, your money will eventually work hard for you.

  1. I find this helpful although applicable siguro ito if Single pa status. But for Single + dependent, there are things that I would need to sacrifice like tithing and education.

    • This is applicable to everyone. Simply, when you don’t set aside funds for a specific purpose, that part of your life gets malnourished.

      Say Tithing.

I assume you are Christian. If that is the case then you believe in God’s Word. And this is what it says,

8-11 “Begin by being honest. Do honest people rob God? But you rob me day after day.

“You ask, ‘How have we robbed you?’

“The tithe and the offering—that’s how! And now you’re under a curse—the whole lot of you—because you’re robbing me. Bring your full tithe to the Temple treasury so there will be ample provisions in my Temple. Test me in this and see if I don’t open up heaven itself to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams. For my part, I will defend you against marauders, protect your wheat fields and vegetable gardens against plunderers.” The Message of God-of-the-Angel-Armies.

      Malachi 3:10-11 The Message (MSG)

This is the only part of the Bible that God was willing to be tested. I think it was even a dare 🙂

If there is any Jar na kailangan niyo po career-in muna, it’s the GIVE JAR, particularly Tithing.

Test it and see your money grow. Pray to God that He will prove Himself true through His Words.

By Tithing, you are tapping into God’s economy. And with God’s economy, there is no lack.

      Be blessed!
